Entrance to Tosho-gu through 'Ishidorii', the 9-meter granite torii at the top of the 'Sennin-masugata' steps. Each step is slightly smaller than the step below, exaggerating the perspective and giving the illusion that the climb is higher.

There are eight monkey tableaux carved on the Shin-kyu (Sacred Stables). Monkeys were considered to be guardians of horses in ancient Japan and live monkeys were once kept in these stables with the white horses. The monkey in this panel is looking to the sky, representing ambition.

Tosho-gu is the final resting place of the first Tokugawa Shogun, Ieyasu, who centralized control the country via military & political force. This is the inner courtyard area: Kaguraden stage, Yomei-mon, Shinyosha, Kara-mon, Honsha central shrine. The buildings are much more ornate than at most shrines in Japan.

Rin-no-ji Taiyuin is the mausoleum of the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu (grandson of Ieyasu). Iemitsu was given the Buddist name Taiyuin posthumously.
